Hey, there, hello, jool lovers! I know it’s been awhile. I took a deep dive into online marketing, and it was wayyyyy deeper than expected. It seemed to take forever, but I found that I could not concentrate on the hows and whys of successful marketing and make jewelry at the same time. One important thing I learned is that a creative should not also be the marketer. Not if they want to stay creative, because the focus in marketing is capturing dollars, and those two elements could not be satisfied in me. It’s not a bad thing, exactly, but the decisions I would make in my jewelry are different if I have to think about the imaginary customer I’m trying to please instead of pleasing myself and enjoying the work. So part of the time I’ve been gone, I’ve been learning about marketing, and the rest I spent trying to make up the time spent studying on making jewelry. I really like the ways these earrings came out – short, dancing bursts of color, beautifully brassy or deep transparent color, lightweight but hard to miss, impossible to ignore:
You can see more views of these lovely pieces here, along with more new earrings. Making earrings is both very amusing and a test in patience, but after all that money talk, I was hot to get something pretty made!
I am enjoying the marketing work too, in a way. I like learning why things are the way they are, and how to recognize opportunities when they arise. There are so many things to learn about my Shopify site, and they change often, sometimes disappearing altogether. It turns out there are a lot of ways to use Facebook’s advertising, lots of interesting opportunities, but I have to learn how to use that too, otherwise I’m just tossing my hard-earned juicybucks right out the window. Everything takes time if you want to do it right, and one more thing I’m learning is the patience to stick with it. I think that’s the hardest part for me. Ultimately, I know I’m helping myself and that thought is keeping me going. But in the meantime, I still have delicious jools to create! Next up: new eyeglass chains!
Til then, be well, jool lovers!
