Hey, there, beadfriends ~
Lately I’ve been feeling like I don’t know where to start on my To Bead list. I have a lot of notes, but no real clear way forward. Only one goal, tho, which is to make something new. But I don’t know what I want to make. I don’t feel pulled to any creative idea. I don’t like that unfocused feeling. I like pointing my energy at something and charging right in. So I’ve been waiting for inspiration to strike, looking thru notes, magazines, playing with beads, and nothing. No strike. But I know it’ll come. I’d like to get to work now, tho.
So I decided to challenge myself. Pick a Thing and go do it. I knew it would jumpstart my muse. Challenging creativity wakes it up. Do you like challenges? For me, it varies. If I know what I’m doing, then I do. Rules and restrictions make you work when the results are uncertain. It doesn’t always work out, right? But when it does, that is such a great feeling! Even if you don’t win the contest, you did enter. That feels good, too.
Chances are good you’ll have learned some new technique, in the process, or seen some new ways to do what you do, as an unexpected bonus to being open to challenge.
Learning to make jewelry was a challenge. Not an unwelcome one, at all. But there are lots of ways to make jewelry, and you have to start somewhere. I plunged right in, and it was gratifying to make something that resembled actual jewelry.
Simple, but I had those wedding cake beads and silver pins, rings, and clasp, and I Made A Thing. I might have a better use for those beads now, but I don’t want to recycle this one. It’s Juicybeads history!
Ok, anyway, so I like a creative challenge, I guess is what I’m saying. So when I saw the Pantone Color of the Year was Classic Blue, a gorgeous darker blue, I knew I’d found my challenge. I looked at my bulging bag of blue beads and realized that it was time to unleash The Blue.
So that’s the next thing for me, and the rules are easy: all the blueness! Will report back with results if it turns out well, and if it doesn’t, we’ll never speak of it again. Deal?
Have you set a creative challenge for yourself this year? Are you progressing as expected? I hope you are! And if you are not doing as well as you thought you were, I hope you see opportunities to improve, and beat your challenge!
Til next time, jool lovahs!
